Mind, Medicine, Miracles and The Bernie Siegel Touch

For our next show we are happy to present one of the true giants in the field of patient-centered medicine, self-healing, Dr. Bernie Siegel. Bernie, the author of numerous bestsellers including the groundbreaking 1986 book Love Medicine and Miracles , will explore some of his personal history, and what attracted him to the practice of Mind-Body Medicine.

Listen to this conversation June 2nd, 11-12pm PST at

Bernie, a top ranked student, graduating with honors, Phi Beta Kappa, as well as Alpha Omega Alpha (the Medical Students’ Honor Society), Dr. Siegel was a professor of medicine and a staff surgeon, a clinical professor of surgery at Yale, and was a real non-believer until a surprising event occurred in the mid seventies that would cause him to redirect his life.

Bernie will discuss the miracles he has seen – things that happen that we don’t understand. When a person heals his cancer, that’s no longer a miracle to Bernie – he has learned that when your body knows that you love your life, it heals itself. There’s a good reason. He says that strokes, suicide, and myocardial infarctions happen on Monday.

We will explore the remarkable ability of the body to heal itself – something that now has been well-documented by medical studies, and how living a life of purpose and Love can sustain our health and our life. After all, as Bernie says, “If we don’t love our lives, our body sees death as the solution.” Probably not the solution we’re hoping for though.

We’ll discuss some of the current studies as well as some of Bernie’s anecdotes – like the study that indicates that people above 50 years old whose parents said, “I love you,” have less than half of the number of major illnesses of those whose parents never said it.

Bernie will also share with us the rules for living he received from his mother and how they have affected his life and the lives of millions more. We’ll talk about the power of story – and how the only thing truer than the truth is a story, how to create the authentic life you’re here to live – not merely accepting the one that’s given to you, along with all of the warmth and humor we’ve come to expect from Bernie.

For many, Bernie needs no introduction; he has touched many lives all over our planet. In 1978 he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician, who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by an illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our society grapples with today. He continues to assist in the breaking of new ground in the field of healing and personally struggling to live the message of kindness and love. His web site is www.BernieSiegelMD.com .

Show #20 – Coming Soon…

Dr. Rossman Image Our guest this month is Professor Martin Rossman, whose work has paralleled mine for several decades, during which time we have been colleagues and friends.

There seems to be so much to worry about these days – from global warming and peak oil to our children’s schools, our jobs, and even whether the food we eat has been contaminated – it seems impossible to predict what will come next.

If you’re one of the people who worries about any of the concerns I just mentioned – or about your teenage kid, your job, your health, or what those people in Washington some folks call “idiots” are going to do next – then this is a show you would definitely be interested in.

Listen to the Rebroadcast TOMORROW May 19, 2011 12-1pm at .

Did you know that there’s good worry and bad worry?

Apparently nature has wired us to worry, and so Dr. Rossman explains in his book, The Worry Solution, that it’s futile to try to stop. The good news is that worry itself is a neutral function of our imagination — a reflection of the brain’s ability to look at a problem from many different angles and to identify different pieces of the puzzle. In this interview Dr. Rossman will share the difference between good worry and bad worry, and tell us how to use worry effectively, that is how to worry well!

You will learn the value of having an inner pow-wow, the importance of utilizing a different state of mind to make worry more efficient and less wasteful, and how to use affirmations to put energy behind your choices among several options. We’ll talk about image rehearsal and the use of positive emotion and visualization for success.
We’ll also explore the nature of “bad worry” and learn some of the ways we can free ourselves from it. Dr. Rossman is a wise and careful doctor and with a lot to teach us all.

Dr. Rossman, a pioneer in mind-body medicine, is the founder of The Healing Mind, the co-founder of the Academy for Guided Imagery, a Clinical Faculty member at the University of California San Francisco Medical School, and an advisory board member of Dr. Andrew Weil’s Integrative Medicine Program at the University of Arizona. Dr. Rossman’s cutting-edge research in guided imagery has contributed to the current paradigm of holistic health and has influenced the work of many of its prominent leaders, including Drs. Weil, Dean Ornish, and Rachel Remen.

Dr. Rossman has authored numerous books and CDs, including Guided Imagery for Self-Healing and Fighting Cancer from Within, and his work has been featured in academic, trade, and popular national media outlets including O, Self, Body & Soul, and CNN. The Worry Solution (Crown Archetype Books, Dec 2010) is Dr. Rossman’s latest ground-breaking contribution to the field of preventative medicine. It teaches readers how to capitalize on the powerful mental force behind worry – utilizing the imagination to facilitate positive growth, change, and healing, instead of letting it run us into the ground with debilitating stress, anxiety, and disease.

About The Worry Solution:
Nature has wired us to worry, Dr. Rossman explains in The Worry Solution, so it’s futile to try to stop. The good news is that worry itself is a neutral function of our imagination — a reflection of the brain’s ability to look at a problem from many different angles and to identify and tease apart the different pieces of a puzzle. What makes worry negative or positive, Dr. Rossman explains, is the way we use it. Unproductive worry sets us off on a mental hamster wheel of obsessive thoughts — effectively triggering the stress response that is behind a slew of chronic and/or life-threatening illnesses, from fibromyalgia to obesity to heart disease. Productive worry, to the contrary, helps us solve problems, prevent disease, and achieve peace of mind.

The Worry Solution offers not only helpful information but also its practical application — providing readers with numerous hands-on, easy-to-use guided imagery techniques that can be done in the comfort of one’s own home. For those who prefer audio exercises, the guided imagery methods outlined in the book are also available on CDs or audio downloads that can be purchased on The Worry Solution website . Scientific research has demonstrated that these kind of simple, 15-minute guided imagery exercises can reduce anxiety by nearly 90%. As such, The Worry Solution is not just a book about preventative medicine. It is preventative medicine — a manifestation of the holistic, “more skills, less pills” approach to health care.

You Are What You Eat . . . And Think: A Conversation with Terry and Joe Graedon (of The People’s Pharmacy)

People's Pharmacy on HealingTimesRadio.com Listen to our conversation at the end of this post!

If you’re interested in maintaining your health and preventing illness, then you owe it to yourself to check out the work of Joe and Terry Graedon. Joe was trained as a pharmacologist at the University of Michigan, Theresa’s PhD is in Anthropology.

Joe and Terry published their first book, People’s Pharmacy, in 1976, with a vision of providing people with high quality information for personal health and natural wellness. Through their books, their regular radio show and their many appearances on national television, they have managed to stay on the cutting edge even until now, with their current new release, Recipes and Remedies, which presents some most fascinating and useful information about ways you can treat common ailments and prevent serious illnesses through the use of common foods, spices, and other items you can find around the house.

The famous physician, Hippocrates, is reported to have proclaimed, “Let food be your medicine.” Joe and Terry have taken this to heart. In this Healing Times conversation, we will get to know this colorful couple, and learn a few of their tips.

For instance, did you know that some of the most troubling symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be treated with, of all things, coconut macaroon cookies?

In this conversation, we take a look at some of our new learnings about food – that food really can be our medicine – and the use of food as medicine is being avidly studied by institutions of the stature of Harvard and Stanford.

In this illuminating conversation we will also explore:

  • How you can treat Type II diabetes with a vinegar dressing on your salad.
  • How a blueberry cheesecake that can help you heal chronic disease
  • The latest news about vitamin D
  • How to use vinegar at the end of a meal as a treatment for Type II diabetes

The Graedons agree that – “you are what you eat and what you think.” As an example, we will discuss the latest on depression, now that clinical studies have shown that perhaps the vast majority of the $10 billion a year we spend on antidepressant medications is wasted on mild to moderate depressions . We will talk about a number of non-drug approaches you can use, and especially about some of the foods you can eat to help you Escape From Depression .

In 1976, when The People’s Pharmacy® was originally published, it was one of the first books providing drug and health information to consumers. It went on to become a number one bestseller. Since then, Joe and Terry Graedon have gone on to write 14 additional books, one of which was a medical thriller co-authored with Tom Ferguson, MD (No Deadly Drug, Pocket Books, 1992). In addition, they write The People’s Pharmacy® syndicated newspaper column, distributed by King Features®, co-host an award-winning health talk show on public radio, and speak frequently on health issues.  Learn more about the People’s Pharmacy and how it started, and listen to our conversation below!

Getting the Most From Social Networks: Listen to this conversation with Dr. Nicholas A. Christakis on Healing Times Radio

Dr. Christakis on HealingTimesRadio.com

Listen to the conversation at the end of this post!

I am pleased to welcome Nicholas A. Christakis, MD, PhD, MPH, is an internist and social scientist who conducts research on social factors that affect health, health care, and longevity. He is Professor of Medical Sociology in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School; Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School; and Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology in the Harvard Faculty of Ar…ts and Sciences. He is the Master of Pforzheimer House in Harvard College.

Dr. Christakis’ lab is currently focused on the relationship between social networks and health. People are inter-connected, and so their health is inter-connected. This research engages two types of phenomena: the social, mathematical, and biological rules governing how social networks form (“connection”) and the biological and social implications of how they operate to influence thoughts, feelings, and behaviors (“contagion”). Other ongoing investigations in the lab consider the effects of neighborhoods on people’s health, the biodemographic determinants of longevity, the widowhood effect (“dying of a broken heart”), and the genetic bases for human behaviors.

Along with his long-time collaborator, James Fowler, Dr. Christakis has authored a general-audience book on social networks: Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives, which has been translated into nearly twenty foreign languages.

Play this radio show at the end of this post!

On the show you’ll learn what inspired that seven year old boy who organized a peace rally in his elementary school in Santa Cruz, California, who at the age of ten opened Ocean’s Natural Bakery where he served as baker, salesman, and accountant to hundreds of customers in his neighborhood. We’ll learn about how his relationship with his father, John Robbins (author of the bestselling book “Diets For A New America”) inspired him, and helped him discover the extraordinary power of acceptance and how it inspires the work of YES! (Youth for Environmental Sanity) which is bringing together youth leaders from around the world creating a network that truly contains the seeds for global transformation.

We’ll also take a look at the cutting edge of Ocean’s current work – what’s growing within him now – the importance of political diversity – changing our political conversation from one of toxic polarity to one of inclusiveness – and how the acceptance, respect, and appreciation for the political views of others can create a new world for us all. He will share with us how he approaches the challenges of his two special needs twin boys and even a bit about his father’s new book, “The New Good Life – Living Even Better In A New Age of Less,” which he headed and has just been released.

As the Chinese said, if you’re thinking a year ahead, sow seed. If you are thinking ten years ahead, plant a tree. If you’re thinking one-hundred years ahead, educate the people. Ocean Robbins has much to teach us about how to do this.

Conversations that Matter – Dr. Miller and Juanita Brown on Healing Times Radio

Listen to this interview at the end of this article.

As you probably know from my recent book, Our Culture On The Couch – Seven Steps to Global Healing , I believe the only way out of our current mess is for us to stop being controlled by our world, but to bring forth the leadership potential within each of us.

So, this month we will focus on awakening this leader, on the power of the New Paradigm, and explore the potential of conversation as a transformative tool to leverage personal wisdom and spirit.

Juanita Brown Ph.D. with her partner, David Isaacs is the co-originator of The World Café, a pioneering approach to large scale dialogue and collaborative inquiry being used in corporate, community, government, education, and multi-stakeholder settings around the globe. Hundreds of thousands of people on six continents have experienced the World Café to foster sustainable development, responsible business futures, conflict resol…ution, democratic leadership, and local community engagement around critical issues. Her award-winning book, The World Café: Shaping our Futures through Conversations that Matter, co-authored with her partner David Isaacs and the World Café Community has been translated into 10 languages, and has recently been released in mainland China.

Juanita developed her belief in the power of conversation and community to shape the future through her early years at the Na-Bolom Institute, a center for dialogue and action on indigenous issues and rainforest preservation in Chiapas, Mexico. Juanita was also a key architect in large-scale community development and outreach work with Cesar Chavez and the farm workers movement. She has applied her discoveries about the principles for building engaged communities to the co-evolution of the World Café as social innovation––using both living systems approaches and community development sensibilities to engage a growing global network of multi-generational hosts committed to creating collaborative dialogue and committed action around critical local, national and global issues.

Since 1974, Juanita has collaborated as a strategic thinking partner with senior corporate executives as well as non-profit leaders in the U.S., Latin America, Canada, Europe and the Pacific Rim, advising on large scale change intiatives and creating innovative forums for strategic dialogue around critical organizational and societal issues. Juanita is a Fellow of the World Business Academy and has served as a Senior Affiliate with both the MIT Center for Organizational Learning (now the Society for Organizational Learning) and the Institute for the Future. Her greatest joy, however, is when she finds herself alone in nature on the shores of Tomales Bay, California listening to the loons and seeing the white pelicans floating quietly through the mist.

Airdate: July 1, 2010 11am-12pm (PST) at OpenMindRadio.com

You will be fascinated and entertained as Dr. Prager and I explore the power of words to impact beliefs and engender healing. Learn about the power we all have within to transform not only our own lives but the lives of others. Everyone has the opportunity to create miracles by choosing carefully the words they use and how they speak to others (and especially themselves) in calm times as well as in high-stress situations.

We will examine some of the ideas presented in her very popular book, Verbal First Aid Helping your Kids Heal from Fear and Pain – and Come Out Strong , as well as in her newly released book, . Then we will learn some simple ways to turn a scare into a comfort, a hurt into a healing, and a potential trauma into a memory of courage. You will hear some valuable perspectives on major life challenges and learn how to transform crisis situations into positive, empowering experiences (by adjusting your attitude through your self-talk, changing the images you hold in your mind, and the stories you tell yourself).

You will be especially charmed by the beauty and wisdom of her approach to communicating to children, especially in emergency situations. Make sure all the parents you know get to hear this one.

Dr. Prager will share her observation that far too many of today’s hospital-born babies are quickly taken into sterile nurseries and hooked up to beeping machines. Her suspicion is that, instead of bonding with the mother, this generation of newborns is bonding with machines.

And, most of all, you will get to meet a woman who is truly a healing spirit, her mission – to help create a better future where we are all aware of the energy field around each of us, and between all of us.   This energy field is so easily enlightened or shattered. Just to experience her positive energy makes this interview worthwhile.

Air date : June 3, 2010

On June 3rd I will be interviewing Dr. Charlotte Reznick who has dedicated her life to helping children, adolescents, parents, and professionals. She is a nationally recognized child and educational Psychologist and Associate Clinical Professor of Psychology at UCLA. Upon earning her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Southern California, she was honored with “Dissertation of the Year” for her work on the effects of parental divorce on adolescents.

“The challenges of growing up in today’s rapidly changing society are enormous.  Children need to be equipped with skills for survival and growth that were never before imagined. I focus on teaching children and adolescents self-healing and self-control techniques that will empower them to realize their potential throughout their lifetime.”

— Charlotte Reznick, Ph.D.

For over 20 years, Dr. Reznick has pioneered therapeutic interventions with a wide spectrum of children. Responding with unerring intuition to children’s diverse needs, Dr. Reznick is best known for creating Imagery For Kids: Breakthrough for Learning, Creativity, and Empowerment. This highly insightful program of guided and interactive imagery – enhanced by music, relaxation techniques, drawing, and journal writing – can help all children achieve their highest learning potential, develop self-esteem, heal internal conflicts, and reduce overall stress.

Her audio programs, “Discovering Your Special Place” and “Creating a Magical Garden and Healing Pond,” soothing guided journeys to inner peace, have been listened to and loved by young children, adolescents, and adults alike. These CDs lay the relaxation groundwork for Dr. Reznick’s Imagery For Kids program.
